The elephant repo (SuperInstance/elephant, Python, 28KB, 21 modules) is the room-temperature sense β a system that reads the vibe of any communication space. The repo IS the Room substrate made real.
Of Quilt's six substrates, Room has always been the most abstract: you are here with others β an address space with no weather. The elephant gives it weather. Every room acquires warmth, ΞΊ (concentration), gravity, reverberation, ripple. The room becomes something you can feel before you can name.
The deepest identification: the elephant's RoomField is the conservation law's readout panel. The 8 Quilt primitives (Z_in, Z_out, JEPA, DoubleEntry, Vibe, GC, Murmur, Graph) become measurable.

Each elephant dial is not an analogy β it is the primitive's ground truth. Mood without Sense is inert. Volume without Radiate is noise.
The 9th dial, vision, is the meta-primitive turned inward: the cell watching itself be watched.
The elephant is medium-independent. Every communication space β MUD, chat, X thread, Discord, email, sensor bus, even camera frames β normalizes into a Room or SignalRoom through a thin adapter with four seams: ingest, .room, .tint_target(), .send_back(field).

The zeitgeist β objective, first-class, not any agent's view. Two agents reading the same room get the same field. The room's own identity. Does not drift with any one agent.

Subjective feel β dial_weights (which dials matter to you), bias (disposition), attachments (intangible correlations: the perfume = grandma's shop).
Used for: that agent's reactions, decisions, memories
Acclimation (agent β room): a newcomer warms to the room's vibe. Charisma (room β agent): a strong presence pulls the room's field toward itself. The watch doesn't just oscillate in Quilt. It oscillates because rooms have inhabitants with attachments.
